Urrrggghh...hangover...but was still windy so back to Daymer Bay, this time
with Martin and Adam. Arrived 1pm and conditions looked similar to
yesterday, tide right out, but more NW'ly and windier! No wind in the car
park so rigging the 5.2 again was tempting but Adam had been down to the
water-front and said it was seriously howling so I put up the 4.5. Due to
the perfect flat water started off on the Skate and Martin let me try his
new swept back 23cm fin that he had purchased off ebay. This felt much
better than the stumpy 21cm freestyle fin that came with the board so have
just bought one for myself. As for the sail size 4.5 was just right and at
the start well wow absolutely cracking sailing. Easy launch straight into
the straps and scream across the seriously windy middle of the river to the
mirror-flat water on the other side, complete an oh so easy smooth
duck-gybe on said flat water before screaming back to the main beach, ooohh
hello nice little waves popping up there so 4-5 backside turns, then fully
plane out of the inside gybe on the big expanse of flat water between the
waves and finish the cycle with a couple of phat airs off the waves on the
way out. Repeat countless times and apply HUGE GRIN!!!!
The wind was forecast to drop off during the afternoon. Did it? Did it
feck. Soon I had to come in to change down to the wave board and then WTF
the 4.0. Does the wind funnel down the river in a NW I wonder?
Unfortunately the Doom Bar was much more onshore and blown out than
yesterday, but never mind, this is Daymer Bay les balls de chiens des spots
de windsurf, take your pick from the THREE different wave breaks, and yep
the main beach was now starting to really work. The little waves from
earlier were now turning into amazingly well-spaced long long and chunky
boom-highers. It was easily 4.0 weather in the middle of the river but
annoyingly the wind on the inside had become a tad gusty, making getting
out through the onshore waves difficult. Really I should have stayed with
the 4.5. Nevertheless I did make it out a few times and was rewarded with
the best backside riding I've ever experienced. Seemingly endless turns on
some waves and oh so simple, followed by easy gybing on the huge flat water
gaps between the waves. If it wasn't for the frickin short days I would
have been out there for hours and hours.
Great session, ding dong 5 stars, and including the NYE party and meeting
up with a load of wsfing mates oh yes what a cracking weekend, well worth
the long drive. I was amazed by how good Daymer Bay was in these conditions
- no matter what your ability level or style the sailing was nothing short
of superb. This is what windsurfing should be like, and makes me realise
how relatively crap the usual south coast conditions are. I'll have to be
back at DB sometime soon.
